Another Texas showdown was happening across town from Houston on Tuesday night as the Dallas Mavericks hosted the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs are managing to remain at a competitive level of basketball as most expect while the Mavs are struggling to win games sitting at a paltry 2-13 record seemingly struggling to find another winning season since their championship in 2011.

Rookie Dennis Smith Jr., who has been the focus of recent conversations due to remarks made by LeBron James, led all Mavs players with a career-high 27 points, and throwing in a few highlight plays including a vicious dunk over center Pau Gasol.

It wasn't enough though, even with both Harrison Barnes and J.J. Barea scoring 19 each as the Mavs were unable to overcome the Spurs in the end.

A seemingly revived LaMarcus Aldridge scored a season-high 32 points, helping the Spurs capture a win over the Mavs, 97-91.

The end result was a win for coach Gregg Popovich, and a new record for becoming the fastest coach in NBA history to 500 road wins, per an Associated Press report via USA Today Sports. It only took the well-respected coach 835 away games, and 41 fewer than the former leading coach, Pat Riley.

When Popovich was asked on how he feels about achieving the 500-win milestone, he gave an answer you could only expect from him.

That pretty much sums up Gregg Popovich's night, while he doesn't care about records, he does care about the team playing well together and he got a pretty good effort from the Spurs that satisfied him, at least for the night.

The Spurs square off against the Minnesota Timberwolves Wednesday night to finish off the second half of their back-to-back games.
