By trading Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, the San Antonio Spurs hope that most topics with regards to the forward will no longer follow them. Of course, even the Spurs themselves know that it’s not going to be that easy avoiding Leonard-related discussions.

Still, for head coach Gregg Popovich, the end of Leonard’s time in San Antonio is a signal for him to stop discussing anything about the process that led the team’s breakup with their former superstar, per Marc Stein of the New York Times.

“I’m not too interested in talking about the past,” Popovich said of the Leonard situation. “It doesn’t do us any good whatsoever.”

Gregg Popovich and the Spurs have been through a lot over the past several months. Although they extended their streak of appearances in the playoffs to 21 seasons, they failed to win 50 games in a season for the first time since 1999. This postseason, they managed to last just five games, as the Golden State Warriors sent San Antonio crashing out in the first round.

With Leonard gone, the Spurs have a newly configured team that still looks like a title contender. In exchange for Leonard, San Antonio got superstar DeMar DeRozan, young big man Jakob Poeltl, and a future draft pick. That’s not to mention the fact that they’ve finally rid themselves of major headaches caused by the Leonard saga.

If people would like Gregg Popovich to open up about the past, they would probably have to ask him about the times when the Spurs won five NBA titles under him.
