Spurs forward Keldon johnson opens up after turning his ankle on Monday, expecting the worst out of the injury.

Johnson, who previously won a Gold medal with Team USA during the Olympics, serves as an integral part of the Spurs' young core and bright future. However, Spurs fans held their breath as Johnson aggravated his injury against the New York Knicks, forcing him to leave the game and enter the locker room.

“I initially thought it was really, really bad. I got back here and it calmed down. It wasn’t as bad as I thought. Luckily, I had my ankles taped, and a few other things went my way. I am just blessed.”

The good news is, Johnson started in San Antonio's 127-112 loss against the Denver Nuggets, scoring 14 points in eight minutes. Although the Spurs lost badly earlier, it is a sigh of relief that their young talent responds well from suffering this ankle injury– which isn't the case for all athletes.

The rebuilding Spurs are certainly looking to develop their young players this season, as seen in Johnson's 14.4 points per game— almost two points better than his average last year.

San Antonio sits at 12th in a loaded Western Conference, holding a 9-16 win-loss record. This position in the West is undoubtedly a far cry from their competitive playoff days with Gregg Popovich, but watching players like Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson perform well could be a sign of greater things to come.
