The San Antonio Spurs have engaged in talks with forward LaMarcus Aldridge on a possible contract extension, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Talks are taking place with only hours prior to the Oct. 16 deadline for veteran to sign an extension.

Aldridge averaged 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season. He can exercise an opt-out clause for 2018-19 and become a free agent. A deal before midnight would allow him to opt-in at $22 million and extend for an additional three years.

The 32-year-old will earn $21.4 million this season as well as a player-option for $22.3 million for next season left on his contract. Any max offer would be 120 percent off either his salary for this or next season, according to ESPN Insider Bobby Marks.

Aldridge had a tough time fitting into San Antonio when he first signed with the team in the 2015 offseason, but ultimately has found his niche in the system — reportedly developing into more of a leader at the start of training camp.

Having kept the core of the team intact this offseason, the Texas native will have an even deeper sense of familiarity with this roster, which could potentially lock him until 2021.

After five straight seasons with the team, Aldridge has reverted to scoring in the high teens during his two seasons with the team.
