San Antonio Spurs forward Rudy Gay has declined his $8.8 million option for the 2018-19 season, according to ESPN's Chris Haynes.

This comes only days after teammate Kawhi Leonard reportedly wants out of San Antonio, which could spell either another discontent within the organization or a massive opportunity for Gay to lock down a long-term deal.

Gay put up the worst numbers of his career since his rookie year, averaging 10.5 points in a meager 21.6 minutes per game under head coach Gregg Popovich, who ran the system centered on LaMarcus Aldridge after Leonard's recurrent injury problem.

Turning down this player-option could represent Gay looking for another landing spot as an unrestricted free agent, or seeking to lock down a long-term offer with the Spurs if they choose to part ways with Leonard at some point this summer.

The Spurs will now wait for Danny Green's decision, as he possesses a player option worth $10 million for the next season.

According to how the chips fall, the Spurs will approach Leonard and have a face-to-face meeting to determine his faith with the team, this after reports of him wanting out have flooded the media, as fans prepare for the worst.

Gay could either benefit or suffer from the unpredictability of this free agent market, according to what the Spurs choose to do this summer.
