Rudy Gay seems to have found a home with the San Antonio Spurs. The veteran swingman was a key rotational player for Gregg Popovich's squad last year and is expected to play a prominent role on the new-look Spurs. His health was in question for opening night, but according to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News, Gay will play.

This is fantastic news for a hobbled San Antonio team. Dejounte Murray is out for the season while Derrick White is sidelined for the beginning of the year as well. Spurs first-round pick Lonnie Walker IV is also still working his way back from a meniscus tear.

It's all hands on deck for the Spurs early, and this is one of the bigger challenges Popovich has faced in his career. For the longest time, the Spurs were a beacon of stability in a league that is known for its chaos. But now, the Spurs are entering a season without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Coincidentally, that's also the last time San Antonio missed the playoffs.

Kawhi Leonard is another relic of the old Spurs. He's replaced by DeMar DeRozan who enters this season with a humongous chip on his shoulder. He's out to prove that the Raptors screwed up.

As the season approaches, the Spurs will need to battle through early trials and tribulations. Having Rudy Gay for the season opener will help.
