Veteran forward Rudy Gay is set to enter another chapter of his NBA career after inking a tw0-year, $17 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs earlier this offseason.

However, this is the first time that he has faced uncertainty concerning his health as he is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon that he suffered back in January. During an interview with Jeff McDonald of mysanantonio.com, Gay acknowledged that he is set to enter the most critical phase of his career.

“I think it was a do-or-die point in my career,” said Gay. “I wanted to be with an organization that was known for winning and can help me raise my game to the next level.”

There is no guarantee that the 31-year-old will be the same player he was prior to this major injury, which has altered the career of many players before him with the most recent and notable case being Kobe Bryant. The possibility remains that he will struggle to regain the same explosiveness that helped make him a dynamic scorer through the first 11 years of his career.

Gay has progressed well through his recovery from the injury as he's already been cleared for all basketball activities and is set to be ready for the start of training camp on Sept. 26. This should put him in line to be a full participant through the entire training camp and preseason.

He has a chance to etch out a prominent role with the Spurs in his first season with the team, likely coming off the bench as one of the primary scoring options.
