One anonymous San Antonio Spurs staffer reportedly has “no doubt” head coach Gregg Popovich will return next season, according to Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News.

Popovich's contract expired at the end of this season. The Spurs lost to the Denver Nuggets in seven games in the first round of the playoffs.

I expect Popovich to come back, and one Spurs staffer said late Saturday night he had “no doubt.” Popovich's contract expired at the buzzer of a 90-86 loss to Denver that began with ineptitude and ended with befuddlement, but I expect him to sign a new one, because this is what he does, and he still believes he can make this flawed team better.

Popovich has been with the Spurs since 1988. He was an assistant coach for six seasons before he became the head coach in 1996. Since then, Popovich has established himself as arguably the greatest coach in NBA history.

The Spurs have won five NBA championships under Popovich. They have had a winning record every year since 1997. Popovich has a regular season record of 1,245-575 and 170-114 in the postseason. The 70-year-old Indiana native has won Coach of the Year three times.

Pundits expected the Spurs to struggle this season since Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard were gone. As long as San Antonio has Popovich, though, the organization will always be relevant.
