The San Antonio Spurs only made a few moves this offseason, as they felt that keeping their core and adding some key pieces are enough for them to possibly win a championship. One of the additions they made is to bring in Rudy Gay to bolster their forward rotation. Despite suffering an Achilles injury that forced him to miss a significant part of last season, the team still thought highly of him and did not hesitate to pursue the veteran.

Gay was asked recently about the status of his recovery and if he feels any lingering effects from the injury. He said, via Melissa Rohlin of MySanAntonio.com, that he is now pain free, and is happy to be a full participant in the Spurs' training camp.

“I’m pain free,” Gay said. “I wouldn’t be out here if I had pain. It’s just getting used to playing basketball again. I’ve been away from the game for so long. I’ve been on the rehab table. Now it’s time to be a basketball player.”

The 31-year-old then raved about being with a franchise like the Spurs. He cited how fortunate he is to have a coach like Gregg Popivich, and also his teammates whom he can rely on.

“It’s a little different, to say the least. Now, I don’t only have a coach I can lean on, but a bunch of vets I can also lean on.”

“There’s more to life than basketball. Basketball has done a lot for me. It’s gotten me this far, taken me all around the world, and I respect that about basketball. But there’s a lot more to life than just my job. I think people forget about that, not just basketball players but everybody, even you guys.”

Rudy Gay's statements is definitely good news to the San Antonio faithful, as it shows how eager he is to prove that he still has a lot left in his tank. If Gay is able to successfully regain his old form, he could turn out to be among the most low key yet significant signings of the offseason, which is something the Spurs have been doing over the years. His all around game will benefit his team a lot, and will fill their need for a reliable scorer and defender at the wing position to back up Kawhi Leonard.
