There hasn't been a lot of traction in trade talks involving Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving, with the Los Angeles Lakers failing to offer the Brooklyn Nets an enticing enough package. Well, according to reports, the San Antonio Spurs could be a third team involved who may be in the mix to acquire Russ.

Via LJ Ellis of Spurs Talk:

According to multiple sources, the trade that is closest to happening involves Kyrie Irving being sent to the Los Angeles Lakers and Russell Westbrook being routed to the Spurs. To facilitate that trade, the sources tell me the Spurs want an unprotected first round pick from the Lakers.

The Spurs would want an unprotected first-rounder from the Lakers in order to pull this trade off. Interesting. San Antonio could definitely use another point guard after they shipped Dejounte Murray off to the Atlanta Hawks and perhaps Russell Westbrook could be the answer.

It's no secret he needs a change of scenery after a tumultuous first season in LA and although the Spurs aren't expected to be contending, he'd be coached by Gregg Popovich. That's certainly not a bad thing.

Ellis noted that San Antonio is likely done making any moves in free agency but potentially bringing in Russ isn't out of the question. He's struggling to fit with the Lakers and perhaps being the leader on a younger team like the Spurs is a solid option.

At this point, it's just a rumor. However, this Russell Westbrook-Kyrie Irving situation is something to keep an eye on if you're a Spurs fan because they may benefit.
