Former NBA forward and current ESPN analyst Richard Jefferson joked on Wednesday that San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan “has been carried by people his entire life.”

Some people thought Jefferson was being serious, but he wasn't.

In fact, Jefferson and Duncan are close friends, so the former Arizona Wildcat was just having some fun at the expense of the Spurs icon:

Duncan is universally recognized as the best power forward in NBA history, so Jefferson would have been out of his mind if he really thought Duncan was “carried” by Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Gregg Popovich.

In 1,392 games with the Spurs, Duncan averaged 19.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 50.6 percent from the field. He won five titles, two regular-season MVP awards and three Finals MVPs with San Antonio.

Jefferson had to know this take would cause a stir. He probably did it on purpose just to have fun with Spurs fans.

This year's Spurs are 26-34 on the season. They are in 11th place in the Western Conference standings and have a lot of work to do if they want to make the playoffs for the 23rd consecutive season.

It’s still strange to see Duncan as an assistant coach, but Spurs and NBA fans as a whole are glad he’s doing it so we get to hear from the Big Fundamental from time to time.

This year’s Spurs squad could use some help from Duncan, as they are in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since 1997.
