Japan was hit with a disastrous amount of torrential rain last month, Square Enix has donated 5 million yen (around 45,000 USD) to help with relief efforts. They donated the amount to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Their official Press Release reads:

“Tokyo, Japan (August 27, 2021) – Square Enix Group (the “Group”) extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to all those affected by the torrential rains in July, 2021.

With the hope to support the earliest possible relief and recovery of affected regions, the Group has made a donation of 5 million Japanese yen to the Japan Red Cross Society.”

Last month's torrential rains wreaked havoc on the Japanese city of Atami, causing several landslides. Japanese news outlet NHK aired footage of the deluge. It showed half-submerged houses, and several landslide sites. Tokyo Electric Power also said that around 2,830 households faced power outages due to the disaster.

Square Enix is one of Japan's largest video game developers. The Square Enix Group, umbrella encompasses Taito Corporation, Luminous Productions, and Eidos-Montreal. They are also affiliated with the Tokyo RPG Factory, and Crystal Dynamics. Some of their most well-known franchises include Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Tomb Raider, and NieR. In the past, they donated to other causes such as #BlackLivesMatter, and the Los Angeles Food Bank. They also launched a charity campaign to support first responders back in 2019.
