After selecting former Georgia wideout George Pickens in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers once again bolstered their wide receiver depth, picking former Memphis standout Calvin Austin III on Day 3.

Austin was not deemed as an NFL-ready wide receiver after his 2021 campaign, but this all changed over the past year. He posted career highs in both receptions (74) and receiving yards (1,149) over his final season at Memphis. More so, he shined at last month’s NFL Scouting Combine thanks to his time of 4.32 on the 40-yard dash, which ranked third among receivers and was also the fifth-best among all players this year.

According to Hall of Fame wide receiver Isaac Bruce, the Steelers drafted a unique wideout in Austin.

During Bleacher Report’s coverage of Day 3 of the NFL Draft, Torry Holt, a longtime wideout of the now Los Angeles Rams, relayed a message from his former teammate about Austin. For Bruce, he sees that Austin is a one-of-a-kind speedster who is also a sheer “worker.”

“I went to a Hall of Fame source on this one,” Holt said. “I hit up my partner Isaac Bruce, who played at the University of Memphis, Hall of Famer … He said, ‘He ain't scared, a worker. A walk-on to a scholarship player. Team MVP. Plays bigger than his size and has legitimate track speed.' That's coming from Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce about Calvin Austin III.”

Holt also provided his evaluation of Austin, where he noted that the former Tigers wideout is a talent who not only boasts keen quickness on the field but also has what it takes to offer versatility to the Steelers offense in the upcoming season.

“I happened to be at the combine watching all these wide receivers and they are all fast,” Holt said. “And Calvin Austin III, 4.3 speed, he can play inside, he can play outside, and he can you some value at the return game.”

From snaps in the slot to the possibility of being the Steelers' go-to kick returner, Austin sure will have plenty of opportunities to make the most out of his rookie campaign.
