The Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans are holding their breaths, hoping that nothing is seriously wring with franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after the veteran reportedly went down and left the field during a practice on Tuesday, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, while citing multiple reports as sources.

According to multiple reports from practice, Roethlisberger went down to the turf after throwing a pass during a drill. He remained down for a brief period and reporters noted he was holding his head once he got back up, although there’s no official word on what led him to go down to the ground.

If anything, Roethlisberger was able to walk off the field under his own power, which is at least one positive sign for the signal-caller’s status.

According to a separate report from Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Roethlisberger appeared to have hurt his head after accidentally banging it on the field.

Burt Lauten, Pittsburgh’s director of communications, also relayed an update from head coach Mike Tomlin, who said Steelers doctors are trying to determine whether the 36-year-old Roethlisberger has sustained a concussion.

Ben Roethlisberger has suffered a laundry list of injuries during his long football career, so the Steelers are understandably being extra cautious in their approach of the quarterback’s use in practice.

In any case, Roethlisberger is not expected to see action this coming Thursday when the team takes on the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 of the preseason, opening the door for the likes of Mason Rudolph and Joshua Dobbs to see increased time on the field.
