Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underwent season-ending right elbow surgery on Monday, according to the team's official website. He is expected to return in 2020.

Roethlisberger underwent surgery in Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. Dr. Neal Elattrache performed the surgery with consultation from Steelers Team Physician Jim Bradley.

The Steelers released an official statement on the surgery, which read:

“Once Ben returns to Pittsburgh, he immediately will begin working with the Steelers’ medical staff on his rehabilitation, and he is expected to make a full recovery and return to the field for the 2020 NFL season.”

Roethlisberger suffered the injury before the Steelers' 28-26 Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He aggravated the injury during the Seahawks game. Second-year quarterback Mason Rudolph replaced him, which he'll be doing for the rest of the season.

Though Roethlisberger sustained the season-ending injury at age 37, he intends on playing out his three-year contract extension given to him over the offseason, which keeps him on-board through 2021.

In an official statement after the injury, Roethlisberger said:

“I’ve been informed that I need season ending surgery on my elbow to continue playing football at the level I expect. This is shocking and heartbreaking for me, to miss this much of a season and feel like I am letting down so many people. I can only trust God’s plan, but I am completely determined to battle through this challenge and come back stronger than ever next season. The Steelers committed three years to me this offseason and I fully intend to honor my contract and reward them with championship level play. I will do all I can to support Mason and the team this season to help win games. I love this game, my teammates, the Steelers organization and fans, and I feel in my heart I have a lot left to give.”

Roethlisberger appears to have more gas in the tank. However, the NFL won't see that until the start of 2020. For his short 2019 season, the six-time Pro Bowler tallied 351 yards and an interception on a 56.5% completion rate. In 2018, he led the NFL in passing yards with 5,129.
