Cam Heyward is one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' most important players, but the defensive lineman's long-term future with the club is suddenly in doubt.

Heyward's agent, Michael Perrett, has told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN that the two sides have not made much progress in contract extension talks:

“I thought we'd be further along in the process. In a normal year, we might be,” Perrett said. “The current situation [with the pandemic] has led to a lot of uncertainty, but NFL business is still moving forward. Cam would love to retire a Steeler, but at this point, he just doesn't know how all of this is going to play out.”

Cam Heyward has not considered holding out but hopes the matter gets resolved, per Perrett.

The 31-year-old is entering the final year of a six-year, $59.5 million extension he signed with the Steelers back in 2015.

Cam Heyward is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he played every game and racked up 83 tackles, nine sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and six passes defended en route to a Pro Bowl appearance an a First-Team All-Pro selection.

The Suwanee, Ga. native, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the first round (31st pick overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Cam Heyward was a reserve for his first couple of seasons but became a full-time starter in 2013. Since then, he has developed into one of the league's top defensive linemen and has made three straight Pro Bowls. He has accumulated 29 of his 54 career sacks over the last three seasons.
