Before Dwayne Haskins tragically passed away on Saturday, he was just enjoying his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was even joking with teammate Najee Harris.
Haskins was in South Florida for some offseason workout with his Steelers teammates. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when he was killed after a dump truck hit him while he was crossing the highway.
“He was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic,” Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda said of the incident, noting that Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene. It is now an “open traffic homicide investigation,” via Associated Press.
Tributes poured in for Dwayne Haskins following the devastating incident. And as people look at his final moments, one video caught the attention of a lot of people. On Friday before the heartbreaking accident, he still posted on his Instagram stories showing him having fun with Najee Harris.
For a lot of fans, it is a huge reminder of how fragile life is.
Harris himself has yet to react to the news, but one can only feel for how devastated he is. At one moment they were just goofing around, and then the accident. Not to mention that they were extremely close as their social media posts prove.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, meanwhile, issued a statement on the devastating news as he shared how heartbroken they are over the shocking death of a beloved member of the organization.
“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin said in his statement. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.”
Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, who briefly coached Haskins when he took over the team in 2020, also sent his condolences and expressed his shock over what happened. After all, the young signa-caller still has a full life ahead of him.
“Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him. This is a very sad time and I am honestly at a loss for words. I know I speak for the rest of our team in saying he will be sorely missed. Our entire team is sending our heartfelt condolences and thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family at this time,” Rivera said in the release.
