The Pittsburgh Steelers went without the services of second-year running back James Conner for last Sunday's disappointing 24-21 loss to the Oakland Raiders due to an ankle injury.

However, there appears to be a chance that he will be back on the field for this week's crucial showdown against the New England Patriots as he was able to take the practice field on Friday, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

The prospects for Conner’s return are a bit brighter on Friday. He was on the practice field to close out the week of work ahead of Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

Conner has been a huge piece of the puzzle offensively for the Steelers this season as he has effectively stepped into the huge role in the backfield as their leading factor with Le'Veon Bell out of the mix. This has seen him become of the most productive running back in the league that has also been a major part of Pittsburgh's push toward the playoffs and NFC North division title.

He has been highly productive as he’s currently sixth in the league with 909 rushing yards along with being second with 12 rushing touchdowns along with hauling in 52 catches for 467 receiving yards and a touchdown. He has notched more than 100 rushing yards five times while becoming the first player in league history to post four games within a single season of 100-plus rushing yards, 50-plus receiving yards, and a touchdown.

His possible return would give them a major boost in the backfield that could see him play a pivotal role against the Patriots. If he's unable to take the field, the Steelers will roll with rookie Jaylen Samuels once again as the starter while Stevan Ridley will help offset him. Samuels put up a solid outing against the Raiders last Sunday as he had 28 rushing yards on 11 carries along with seven catches for 64 receiving yards.
