There are only a few Steelers players who have a hold on fans' imagination the same way “Mean” Joe Greene has. The Pittsburgh Steelers legendary defensive tackle terrorized plenty of running backs and quarterbacks throughout the 70's, securing his place in the annals of NFL history as a Hall of Famer.

If you think that is the only thing Greene is known for, you might want to hold onto that thought. It's been revealed that Greene was named as one of the candidates to make the NFL 100 All-Time Team.

The league revealed his inclusion to the shortlist earlier today, and it's expected that seven more legendary tackles will be selected alongside him.

Greene won the Super Bowl four times with Steelers in the 70s. He made his impact known early on, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1969 and Defensive Player of the Year in 1972 and 1974. His loyalty to the Steelers is something fans also admire, as he didn't move to any other team during his 13-year career in the NFL.

However, you shouldn't even think about how he would fare in today's NFL. He doesn't like comparing eras, thinking that it's a waste of everyone's time.

He had this to say when asked about Aaron Donald possibly fitting with the Steel Curtain:

“That was then. This is now,” Greene began, per DK Pittsburgh Sports. “I don’t make comparisons like that. I think it’s unfair to do that. That guy is here today, setting the table and setting the tempo. If I threw him into the past, I don’t know. You have to make that decision, and it will be a weak one.”

It will be interesting to see which names will join him on the shortlist, but there's no reason to not expect them to have careers as legendary as his.
