The departure of former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown has left a notable void opposite of wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. It appears wide receiver Diontae Johnson is beginning to make his case as a potential replacement.

Pittsburgh's organized team activities have given them a chance to get an early look at their new receiving corps. According to Bryan DeArdo of 247 Sports, Johnson has already made quite the impression on Smith-Schuster:

“He impressed me a lot today,” Smith-Schuster said of Johnson. “He caught a couple balls. Ben told me he made a couple of plays. He’s doing a good job.”

Johnson added that while he may be similar in age, there is plenty he can learn from the other wideouts.

“I can still learn from them, even though we’re all young,” he said. “They’ve been here, played, had success. I’m just gonna come in and learn from them … try to tailor (some of their advice) into my game.”

It is no secret that the Steelers have lost some serious firepower in recent years with the departure of Brown and running back Le'Veon Bell. Fortunately, the emergence of Smith-Schuster and running back James Conner has helped alleviate some of the turnover. Regardless, Pittsburgh knew full well they needed to invest on the offensive side of the ball this offseason.

They selected Johnson with the 66th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He established himself as an electrifying playmaker at Toledo thanks to his versatile skill set as a receiver and return man. The Steelers have a bonafide No. 1 wideout to work with in Smith-Schuster. Johnson will have a chance to potentially serve as a complementary option right away in Pittsburgh.
