During Saturday's NFL preseason game against Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant suffered what appeared to be a late hit from safety Matthias Farley.
The play saw Bryant make a catch on a screen play that saw him get initially taken down and wrapped up by Colts cornerback Vontae Davis but was hit by Farley near the end of the play as he was already going down to the ground.
In light of that, Bryant told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN after the game that he believes the hit he received was on purpose.
Asked about the nature of the hit, Bryant said it was “definitely intentional.”
“I was already on the ground. It is what it is,” Bryant said. “My foot was already bent. … [Farley] just came in and hit me.”
There is no clear way of knowing whether the hit that Farley gave was on purpose, but it came as the play was winding down with Bryant already being taken down to the ground by Davis. That said, the Colts second-year safety has already come out to state that he did not have the intention to hurt Bryant.
Ultimately, what is in question is the timing of the tackle being made on the play. Bryant had been reinstated by the NFL in the offseason after missing the entire 2016 campaign with the Steelers due to multiple drug offenses.
