If you wanted a reason to smile today (let's be honest, you need it, we all do), the Pittsburgh Steelers are here to help.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, on Tuesday, they placed injured linebacker Ryan Shazier on the reserve/retired list. While that does sound like the happiest of news, it is them continuing to support Shazier.

Shazier last played in 2017, when he suffered a terrifying injury that could have left him paralyzed for life.

For the next two seasons, the Steelers placed the linebacker on the Physically Unable to Perform list. This meant they he was still getting paid.

Now they have placed him on the reserve/retired list. Meaning he is still part of the organization. So they continue to keep him in the family.

Shazier has been steadily rehabbing, with the goal of playing in the NFL again.

While that seems like a long shot, it is not impossible. And the linebacker has already made more progress than most expected, so don't be surprised if he does indeed shock the world and get back to the NFL.

For now though, Shazier is still a long ways away. Pittsburgh appears to be sticking with him through it all though. And that has to make you smile.

Shazier was on his way to being one of the top-tier linebackers in the NFL before the injury. He was ready to give the Steelers a long career. It was cut incredibly short however.

Despite that, Pittsburgh has supported him every step of the way. And that's just wonderful to see. They could've gone 1,000 different ways and no one would have really blamed them. Maybe they would've gotten a little bit of bad press for cutting ties with the injured Shazier, but within a week it would've been old news that only rival fans would bring up once in a while.

Instead, they've gone full-on supportive parent. This is the type of news we need more of right now. Good luck to Shazier as he continues to work his way back to the NFL, and a tip of the cap to the Steelers for the classy move.
