The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed kicker Matt McCrane and have placed fellow kicker Chris Boswell on the injured reserve list, according to Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official team website.

Boswell has not been injured at any point this season, so it seems like this move is due to his lack of production more than anything else.

The 27-year-old has had a dreadful year, making just 13 of his 20 field goals and missing five extra points. This comes a year after Boswell made the Pro Bowl, as he connected on 35 of his 38 field-goal tries a year ago, making all four of his boots from 50 yards or longer. He also made 37 of his 39 extra points.

Boswell, who played his collegiate football at Rice University, went undrafted but signed with the Houston Texans as a free agent in May 2014.

He remained with the Texans through September 2014 before being removed from the team's practice squad. He then signed with the New York Giants in January 2015, lasting through September of that year before being cut.

That was when Boswell finally landed with the Steelers and participated in his first NFL action that ensuing season, making 29 of his 32 field-goal attempts in 2015.

Boswell signed a four-year extension with Pittsburgh last offseason.

McCrane has appeared in four games between the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals this season, making five of his nine field goals.

The Steelers suffered a devastating loss to the New Orleans Saints last weekend, dropping them out of the playoff picture in the AFC. In order to make the postseason, they will need to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend and couple that with a Baltimore Ravens loss to the Cleveland Browns or a tie between the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.
