The Pittsburgh Steelers have undergone some notable changes on offense this offseason. Wide receiver Ryan Switzer sees an opportunity to etch out an integral role for himself in the 2019 NFL season.

The Steelers have a few openings in their receiving corps to fill in training camp. According to Jonathan Bombulie of TribLIVE, Switzer is gunning for the slot position:

“It takes a different kind of guy to work the middle of the field, be able to be on the same page as the quarterback,” Switzer said. “There’s a lot of different reads and a lot of different adjustments you’ve got to make in the middle of the field. I’m getting the hang of it. I’m, obviously, not there yet, but I’m working on it.”

Switzer's optimism is certainly understandable. He will have a full offseason tow work with in Pittsburgh after he was traded twice last year and was forced to quickly get assimilated with the offense. As a result, he finished the 2018 campaign with a mere 36 receptions for 253 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

The departure of wide receiver Antonio Brown has left a notable void in the Steelers receiving corps. There is good reason to believe that wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is more than capable of stepping up as the No. 1 option in the passing game based on his track record, however, Pittsburgh will still need other viable, weapons to serve as complementary options.

Switzer will face some stiff competition for the slot role from Eli Rogers and Donte Moncrief. It should prove to be a productive opportunity for whichever player is able to earn it in training camp.
