We're still a few months out from the beginning of the 2018 NFL season, but with OTAs underway, there have already been a number of serious injuries. The latest comes to Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jake McGee.

According to the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, McGee suffered what the team fears is a torn Achilles, ending his season.

McGee spent 2017 on the Steelers' practice squad but the franchise was confident he'd make the active roster behind Jesse James this year. They'll instead rely on Vance McDonald and Xavier Gamble to fill out the depth chart.. If Pittsburgh wants to explore the free agent market, future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates is still available.

After playing college ball at Virginia and Florida, McGee previously played with the then San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, and Carolina Panthers before joining the Steelers.

He wasn't the only Steeler to go down on Wednesday. Jerald Hawkins, who was competing for a tackle position, endured what appears to be a serious knee injury. The Los Angeles Rams lost defensive lineman Morgan Fox to a season-ending knee injury as well, and a torn Achilles for Denver Broncos linebacker Deiontrez Mount ended his year prematurely as well.

As offseason workouts roll on, it's likely more notable players will go down with freak injures that often occur without any contact. One of the biggest examples last season was Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was on pace to compete for the Rookie of the Year award before tearing his ACL in practice.
