With the talk of more senior members being included in the next Pro Football Hall of Fame class, there are many different opinions on who should be included. Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy has made his pitch, and he thinks former Pittsburgh Steelers great Donnie Shell should get the nod.

On Twitter Dungy  — who was a teammate on the late-1970s Steelers — pointed out some of Shell's most important stats, and why he believes he deserves the call for the hall.

“Donnie Shell should be included in any discussion of Seniors for the HOF. 5 straight Pro Bowls, 3X First Team All Pro, 4 SB Rings, 51 INT, 19 Fumble Recoveries. Overlooked because of 9 teammates who are in and the fact that his career split 70’s and 80’s so no All Decade Team.”

Shell had quite a career with the Steelers, but Dungy is right: Shell is often overlooked because of how many star players were on the team during that time. Shell started 11 straight seasons for the Steelers and ended his career with 51 interceptions, which lead the history books for a strong safety.

Shell was elected to the Steelers All-Time Team, the College Football Hall of Fame, and to the NFL Silver Anniversary Super Bowl Team, but getting elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame would no doubt top all of that.

Shell was named to the Pro Bowl five times and won a Super Bowl title with the Steelers four times. It's still almost a year before the election for the senior class of the Hall of Fame, but it makes a lot of sense for Shell to get that call.
