As was expected, Mitchell Trubisky earned first-team reps over the Pittsburgh Steelers’ mandatory minicamp schedule. This came after he featured in the Steelers’ two-week OTAs, where he also took part in a multitude of passing drills.

Trubisky not only continued to get more of a deep dive into Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s playbook for the 2022 season, but he also formed early chemistry with multiple wideouts over the past few weeks. Among them, rookie wide receiver George Pickens took some time to catch passes from the former Chicago Bears quarterback.

Overall, Pickens was quite impressed with Trubisky’s assertiveness in opening up the passing game with downfield throws.

“He's been one of the quarterbacks to release it for sure,” Pickens said during Steelers' mandatory minicamp. “Throw it down the field. A lot of the guys been trying to get with the program, which is totally fine, you only have so many reps. But yeah, he's been launching it.”

During his four-season run with the Bears, Trubisky did not necessarily open up the offense with crucial deep passes on a game-by-game basis. Over the 2019 campaign where he started in 15 games for Chicago, he logged an 8.0 intended air yards per pass attempt average — the exact same mark that both Carson Wentz and Daniel Jones posted.

The Steelers have yet to provide a declaration on just who will be their starting quarterback come Week 1 of the 2022 season. Trubisky did note this past week that he is “preparing to be a starter” in his debut campaign with the Steelers.

Next up for the Steelers will be their training camp schedule, which is set to kick off next month.
