Stephen A. Smith finally made his return to ESPN's First Take on Monday morning after being away from the show for several weeks while battling COVID-19. At the start of the segment, Smith took the time to detail his fight against COVID-19 for the show's audience and revealed some terrifying news regarding his bout with the virus. According to Smith himself, coronavirus absolutely ravaged the sportscaster, leaving him genuinely unsure as to whether he would make it through. Smith claims that doctors told him the only reason he survived his battle against COVID-19 is that he was vaccinated against the virus.

“I had a 103 degree fever every night. Woke up with chills in a pool of sweat. Headaches were massive, coughing profusely. It got to a point, right before New Year's Eve… they told me, had I not been vaccinated, I wouldn't be here. That's how bad I was.” Smith said. “I had pneumonia in both lungs, my liver was bad, and it ravaged me.”

Smith went on to detail his road to recovery, and how he still has a long way to go until he's back to 100%. He then thanked his doctors and the medical professionals who kept him safe during the trying times. Smith used his platform to share his story and try to inform people that the virus can impact everyone in different manners.

While Smith started out the episode on an emotional note, he was back to his usual self before long, finding joy in the Dallas Cowboys' loss at the expense of co-host Michael Irvin. Not even a near-death experience can hold Stephen A. back from celebrating an embarrassing Cowboys' loss.
