The New England Patriots have given reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore a significant raise for this season today, kicking up his salary from $10.5 million to $15.5 million. This will give him a chance to earn up to $17.5 million in incentives if he becomes DPOY once again, even with two years left on his deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

This was a worthy raise for the cornerback as others at his position like Jalen Ramsey and Tre'Davious White recently receiving big extensions.

The Patriots have been famous for shopping at the five-and-dime from time to time and getting maximum value out of their draft picks, but they've proven they're not scared to properly compensate those who excel at their position.

Gilmore had a bombastic 2019 season, hauling in six interceptions and returning two of them for touchdowns. The soon-to-be 30-year-old led the NFL in interceptions and passes defended (20) in 2019, enough reason for the Patriots to give him a $5 million raise and properly compensate him for his prowess.

A product of the University of South Carolina, Gilmore entered the league as a first-round pick with the Buffalo Bills in 2012 and spent the first five years of his NFL career hounding AFC teams. Gilmore built on his lone Pro Bowl appearance with the Bills and became one of the biggest secondary threats in the league when he moved to the Patriots.

He was selected to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro First Team in back-to-back years (2018, 2019), soon netting the Defensive Player of the Year this last season.

Gilmore, however, could start this NFL season on the sidelines as he was recently limited in practice with a hamstring injury.
