Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is known for his candid approach to the media. On Friday, he made an admission that may catch basketball fans off guard.

When speaking to Monte Poole of CSN Bay Area, Kerr revealed that he has used marijuana twice in recent times, in order to aid the chronic back pain that ruled him out during much of the 2015-2016 season:

“I guess that maybe I could get into some trouble for this, but I’ve actually tried it twice,” Kerr said. “A lot of research, a lot of advice from people, and I have no idea if I would … maybe I would have failed a drug test. I don’t even know if I’m subject to a drug test or any laws from the NBA, but I tried it, and it didn’t help at all. But it was worth it because I’m searching for answers on pain. I’ve tried painkillers and drugs of other kinds as well, and those have been worse.”

The NBA takes drug use very seriously but their stance on marijuana is softer than it is on harder substances such as cocaine or performance enhancing drugs.

Kerr no longer smokes weed, but he feels as though the league should reconsider their approach to medical marijuana, stating that painkillers do much more damage than the drug.

“Vicodin is not good for you,” he said. “It’s not. It’s way worse for you than pot.”
