The Phoenix Suns are flying high with the best record in basketball 48-10. They're a clear title favorite and that has a lot to do with the brilliance of veteran guard Chris Paul, who is such a key figure on and off the court.
But prior to the All-Star break, CP3 suffered a thumb injury against the Houston Rockets and was actually ejected in that same contest. While the MRI results haven't been released, Paul did have his hand wrapped during All-Star Game practice with Team LeBron on Saturday and also revealed that he could very well miss time when the season resumes next week.
“We're 48-10 and if we do miss some time I know the guys are going to hold it down,” Paul said, referencing the Suns' record. “There's always going to be a frustration with injury. My hand surgeon is part of my family now.”
Suns head coach Monty Williams also refused to address how long CP3 could potentially be out, but it's important to note the 12-time All-Star does have a history of hand injuries. He underwent surgery on his wrist after the Finals last season as well. Paul has played all 58 games for Phoenix in 2021/22, averaging 14.9 points and an NBA-leading 10.7 assists.
While losing CP3 for a short period of time is far from ideal, the Suns possess a ton of depth. The likes of Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and others will be relied upon to really step it up if Paul is in fact sidelined. Ultimately, his long-term health is most important as Phoenix looks to make another title run in a few months' time.
