Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton was not drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft for his shooting prowess. As a more traditional, low-post big, Ayton is more old school in his ability to score from the post.

However, Ayton might be taking the next step in his development as an offensive star, as he showcased a smooth three-point stroke at TheCrawsOver Pro-Am league in Seattle, WA:

Ayton also went to his bread and butter in the post:

The former University of Arizona star attempted all of four three-pointers in his rookie season with the Suns, but he may be expanding his range.

Star centers such as Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and Joel Embiid have become greater offensive threats for their ability to shoot the three, and NBA fans saw just how valuable a sweet-shooting big can be in the playoffs, with guys like Brook Lopez and Marc Gasol offering offensive variety and floor spacing.

Ayton averaged 16.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in his first year, but the Suns actually lost two more games than they had in the year prior. While increased range would certainly make him a more dangerous scorer, the Suns are hoping that Ayton has made just as many strides on the defensive side of the ball.

Although he was one of the better individual defenders for a Suns group that struggled in terms of team defense, Ayton averaged under a block per game. Given that backcourt guys like Devin Booker struggle to guard, they need Ayton to become more of an imposing rim protector and help defender.

Still, the thought of Ayton consistently knocking down triples must be tantalizing for a Suns fan base that is desperately hoping to see their youngsters take the next step.
