The Phoenix Suns used a No. 1 pick to take former Arizona Wildcats center Deandre Ayton off the board during last month’s 2018 NBA Draft. Shortly after, the Sacramento Kings followed suit and took a big man themselves, selecting Marvin Bagley III as the draft class’ second overall pick.

It’s too early to tell who between Ayton and Bagley is going to have a better career in the NBA, but some premature judgments can already be made when the two hulking rookies collide in a Summer League game this coming Friday.

The two played together for a brief time as teammates back in their high school days at Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix, so Ayton is expecting to have some friendly exchanges with Bagley on Friday, but when it comes to the game, don’t expect him to have any special treatment for Bagley.

“Me and him are going to smile at each other. We’re just going to laugh. I think we’re going to laugh for a little bit and then it’s going to get down to business once we get a jump ball,” Ayton said. “That’s doing to be a competitive game. That’s going to be a fun game. Very intense.”

Basketball fans have gotten an early look of Bagley this summer, as the Kings have already played two games this summer in the California Classic. Ayton and the Suns, meanwhile, are set to make their Summer League debut this Friday against the Dallas Mavericks in Las Vegas.
