Unlike most social media trolls, Phoenix Suns rookie Deandre Ayton has massive respect for professional women hoopers.

According to Scott Bordow of AZCentral.com, the Suns' big man was genuinely awestruck when he got the chance to meet the Phoenix Mercury scoring machine, Diana Taurasi.

Love this quote. Deandre Ayton on meeting Diana Taurasi Tuesday: “I was freaking out. She was saying, ‘Hello, it’s great to have you.’ I was like star-struck. I was speechless. She is the Michael Jordan of the WNBA.”

Taurasi has been with the Mercury since 2004. Her longevity and sustained excellence have earned her the respect of her peers and fans of basketball in general.

Taurasi is the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer with 8,229 points, nearly a thousand more than the second player on the list, former Houston Comets star, Tina Thompson. Taurasi is currently behind Thompson in the all-time leader in field goals made with 2,624, but she’s only seven made baskets away from setting a new WNBA record in that department. That’s very much likely going to happen as the Mercury have over a dozen games left on their schedule before the regular season ends mid-August.

Some folks, however, may have an issue with Ayton saying Taurasi is the Michael Jordan of the WNBA, but the Suns’ rookie could also be just too young to have caught a glimpse of what kind of havoc the likes of Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, and Sheryl Swoopes had wreaked during their respective heydays.
