With teams' starting lineups being revealed heading into opening week, the Phoenix Suns are looking to start Isaiah Canaan at point guard position in the season opener against the Dallas Mavericks.

Gina Mizell of The Athletic reported this development from the Suns' camp:

The 6-foot scoring point guard served as a quality backup for the Suns last year. After being waived by the Houston Rockets early into last season, the Suns picked Canaan up from free agency. He played 19 games for the team, averaging 9.1 points, 4.0 assists and 2.3 rebounds.

However, Canaan suffered a gruesome season-ending ankle injury versus the Dallas Mavericks, the same team that he will be up against in his first game since recuperating from that horrific injury.

Clevis Murray of AZ Central wrote about how the Suns' training staff helped him to recover and get an opportunity to play on an NBA court again.

“It means a lot,” Canaan said. “Coming off an injury like that, nobody expects you to play at the highest level you were playing at before you got hurt. I mean just to have an opportunity is all I can really ask for.”

Still, it remains to be seen how many minutes Canaan will be getting from head coach Igor Kokoskov. Kokoskov has recently hinted at playing Devin Booker as a point guard, and the recent signing of veteran Jamal Crawford could also eat up on Canaan's minutes.
