Phoenix Suns general manager James Jones says the organization got a lot better on Friday by hiring Monty Williams as the team's new head coach.

Williams, who is an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers, signed a five-year deal with the Suns on Friday. He will stay with the Sixers throughout their playoff run.

The Suns finished with the worst record in the Western Conference for the second-straight season in 2018-19. Phoenix fired Igor Kokoškov after just one season.

The Suns roster is headlined by star shooting guard Devin Booker, 2018 No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton, small forward Kelly Oubre Jr. and swingman Josh Jackson. The franchise is hoping it gets the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft so they can draft either Duke star Zion Williamson or Murray State point guard Ja Morant.

Williams was head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans for five seasons. He went 173-221 during the regular season and 2-8 in the playoffs. The 47-year-old will have his work cut out for him in Phoenix. The Suns haven't had a winning record since 2014 and last made the playoffs in 2010.

Williams is well-respected in the league. He figures to connect very well with the players on the Suns once he gets to Phoenix.
