It has just been confirmed that Phoenix Suns swingman Kelly Oubre Jr. is set to miss out on his team's opener against the Washington Wizards. The 5-year veteran is recovering from surgery on his meniscus back in March.

This report comes via Kellan Olson of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM:

Speaking with the media for the first time since the surgery on July 14, Oubre said he “feels fine” and that it was on the Suns’ training staff to decide if he can play.

Clearly, the Suns are playing it safe with their prized forward. It appears that Oubre is not yet one hundred percent.  Despite his willingness to take the floor, his team has opted to err on the side of caution.

Phoenix is currently six games outside of the playoff picture in the West. While they mathematically have a shot at making the postseason, the odds are stacked against them. Every single game will be of utmost importance for this team, and the absence of Oubre will serve as a significant blow for their side.

The 24-year-old has been tremendous in his first full season with the Suns, averaging a career-best 18.7 points on 45.2 percent shooting, 6.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals. Oubre also improved greatly as a perimeter threat, connecting on 1.9 triples per contest on a career-high 35.2-percent clip.

Kelly Oubre Jr. will be entering the final year of his current deal next season. Unless he signs an extension with Phoenix, he will be part of a talent-laden 2021 free agency class.
