Phoenix Suns general manager James Jones has released a statement of DeAndre Ayton's suspension for violating the NBA's Anti-Drug policy.

Here is Jones' statement below per Marc J. Spears on ESPN. Jones expressed his disappointment with Ayton's actions, noting that the organization will make an effort in making him understand the gravity of his actions.

Ayton was initially handed a 25-game suspension. However, after a much thorough investigation, it was revealed that the former first overall pick unintentionally ingested the banned substance. As such, the league is reviewing the case again and is looking to reduce or even rescind the penalty.

Ayton, for his part, released a statement of his own. He apologized to his family, the Suns fans and the organization. Ayton also noted that he was not aware of what he was putting inside his body and is looking to work with the NBPA with regard to his sanction.

“I want to apologize to my family, the entire Suns organization, my teammates, partners, our fans and the Phoenix community. This was an unintentional mistake and unfortunately I put something in my body that I was completely unaware of. I do understand the unfortunate impact that this has on so many others, and for that I am deeply sorry. I'm extremely disappointed that I've let my team down. I will continue to work with the NBPA to go through arbitration and am hopeful of a positive resolution.”

While it's an unfortunate incident for the rebuilding Suns squad, this dark chapter could have a happy ending. Depending on the result of the second investigation, Ayton might don the Suns jersey very soon.
