The Phoenix Suns have reportedly been granted permission to meet with Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams about their head coaching job, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Williams is the Suns' top target in their coaching search.

The Suns fired Igor Kokoškov on Monday. He was with the franchise for just one season. Phoenix had the worst record in the Western Conference in 2018-19, going just 19-63.

Williams and the Sixers are currently up 3-1 against the Brooklyn Nets in their first-round series. The 47-year-old is also being pursued by the Los Angeles Lakers, who parted ways with Luke Walton.

The Suns have been a walking disaster for years now. Star shooting guard Devin Booker will be playing for his fifth different head coach next season. It's certainly suboptimal for DeAndre Ayton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, to be playing for his second head coach after just one season. At this point, taking the Suns' head coaching job is almost like signing a one-year deal since management never commits to anyone.

Williams, one of the most beloved figures in the NBA, was the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans from 2010-15. He went 173-221 in the regular season and 2-8 in the postseason before being dismissed by the team in May 2015, despite the Pelicans making their first postseason appearance in the Anthony Davis era. Williams has also been assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Phoenix hasn't had a winning record since the 2013-14 season, and haven't made the playoffs since 2010.
