The will of the people, evidently, doesn't matter much to the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns have more than $20 million in cap space to work with this summer, and could create enough financial flexibility to sign a max-level player by moving undesirable salaries. As a result, many believe Phoenix is a serious suitor for Brooklyn Nets guard D'Angelo Russell, a restricted free agent. The team's fans certainly hope that proves the case, as an extra dedicated subset of followers paid for a billboard in Phoenix expressing their excitement about the prospect of Russell joining Devin Booker in the Suns' backcourt.

“Someone brought up the idea of chipping in to put up a billboard to kind of bring some awareness to bringing D-Lo to Phoenix,” one of the fans involved said, per Arizona Sports 98.7.

“Obviously, we didn’t know this was the kind of reaction we were going to get.”

One problem: Phoenix is “not expected” to chase Russell in free agency, per 98.7's John Gambadoro.

Russell enjoyed by far the best season of his four-year in 2018-19, his second with the Nets after being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers in advance of the 2017 NBA Draft. He notched career-highs across the board of 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game while shooting 43.4 percent overall and 36.9 percent from beyond the arc on a high volume of attempts, en route to his first All-Star berth.

The 23-year-old is a restricted free agent, but is poised to have his rights renounced by the Nets should Kyrie Irving agree to sign in Brooklyn. If that proves the case, Russell is reportedly interested in a return to the Lakers to play with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
