The Phoenix Suns went outside the box with their latest move to reinforce their backcourt.

According to the latest report from NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Suns signed 6'4″ Danish guard Gabriel Lundberg, who had just parted ways with previous club CSKA Moscow amidst the ongoing strike between Russia and Ukraine.

The Phoenix Suns are signing guard Gabriel Lundberg on a two-way contract for the rest of the season, sources tell ESPN. Lundberg, 27, left CSKA of Moscow recently amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Dane is considered the best international free agent available in the market.

According to Eurohoops, Lundberg had reportedly paid out his own contract buyout just to be able to flee the hostile situation brewing in and around Russian soil. Playing for a team based in Russia's capital isn't exactly the ideal situation to be in when you're a top-flight international hoops talent with no direct ties to the regions involved. He's also not alone in his decision as several of his teammates followed suit.

Getting snapped up right afterwards by the Suns isn't exactly a bad end result for the Dane. He's age 27 and in the peak of his abilities while having a lengthy resume of international experience as he joins and NBA roster poised to make a run at a championship.

Lundberg played 39 games in the EuroLeague under CSKA Moscow in the last two seasons. He averaged 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists in his last campaign. For the regular season at the VTB United League, he had tallies of 12.6 points, 3.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game. While those stats seem modest compared to some of the gaudy numbers in the NBA, European basketball stats are measured via a different lens.

Gabriel Lundberg may ultimately never crack Phoenix's rotation, but he could fit the bill as a surprise addition that could contribute if he assimilates quickly to the pace of the NBA.
