Amidst all the chaos of the NBA trade deadline brought on Thursday, the Phoenix Suns were quietly able to address their need for a point guard. After seeing Isaiah Canaan go down last week following a gruesome ankle injury he suffered, it was expected that they will pull off a move to bring in a replacement for him. They did just that as they were able to successfully complete a deal for former Orlando Magic guard Elfrid Payton in exchange for a second round pick in next June's draft.

Now that they have the 23-year-old Louisiana-Lafayette product in their fold, they are reportedly going to waive Canaan to open up a roster spot for him. Despite being fond of having the injured point guard on and off the court, it was an easier decision to make for the Suns as he is slated to miss the remainder of the season, and that he will be an unrestricted free agent this coming summer, according to Scott Bordow of AZ Central.

Payton was the 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft and can be considered an upgrade from Canaan, as he has better averages than him since entering the league. He has also spent the first three seasons of his pro career with the Magic, where he emerged as one of the better young point guards in the league today. While 3-point shooting may not be his strong suit, Payton can still knock them down occasionally, but has proven that he is a better playmaker with a career average of 6.5 assists per game.

With the Suns, he'll have a chance to drop more dimes as he will have a plethora of shooters as his new teammates with the likes of Devin Booker and Troy Daniels, among others, waiting beyond the arc to shoot. Payton can also attack the basket and locate the young bigs for some alley oops or drop passes for open shots.
