Deandre Ayton was taken first overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, with his selection continuing to be a controversial topic. Now, Antonio Williams, a former scout of the Arizona-based team, revealed why Phoenix took Ayton over Luka Doncic and Trae Young during a one-on-one on the Basketball Network.

During the interview, Williams spoke about the Suns' decision to take Ayton over seemingly surefire players like Doncic and Young. Williams  emphasized that Phoenix took Ayton due to his uncanny abilities and the need for them to add a center.

“With Deandre, one of the things was, you look at the things that he does…at his size when you combine the athleticism and the dexterity and the agility there are just things he can just roll out of bed and do. Of course, we knew Luka and Trae Young were going to be great, but when we’re looking at Deandre again, there are just things that we felt he inherently can just roll out of bed and do that we didn’t have on our roster.”

In his third season in the NBA, Deandre Ayton is having the worst scoring output of his career, as he's compiling 14.5 points per game for the Suns. On the other hand, both Doncic and Young continue to prove themselves as up-and-coming superstars in the league.

Luka Doncic is an MVP candidate for the Dallas Mavericks as he just made his second consecutive All-Star Game. As for Trae Young, the shifty guard of the Atlanta Hawks had a case for an All-Star nod after he recorded 26.4 points and 9.4 assists per game before the All-Star break.

While Ayton continues to find his consistent role with the Suns, the decision to draft him over the likes of Doncic and Young becomes even worse as the days pass by.
