Veteran center Tyson Chandler is expected to sign a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers after clearing waivers on a contract buyout with the Phoenix Suns, according to several reports. As part of his buyout with the Suns, Chandler is giving back $2.1 million of his $13.5 million deal.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Chandler, who was in the final season of his four-year deal with the Suns, will serve as a backup to starting center JaVale McGee once he officially joins the Lakers.

“We love the fact that we're going to get another veteran,” Lakers star LeBron James told ESPN. “A guy who plays hard, a guy who's very smart and another champion to add to the champions that we have in this system here today, and it adds depth in our frontcourt, which we have had trouble with at times.”

Tyson Chandler, a 36-year-old native of Los Angeles, has played in seven games with the Suns this season, racking up averages of 3.7 points on 66.7 percent shooting from the field, 5.6 rebounds, and just under one assist (0.9) in 12.7 minutes per outing.

The sides agreed to a buyout on the $13.6 million left in the final year of his original four-year deal, sources said.

The prorated minimum for Chandler once he clears waivers will be $2.1 million. The Lakers will have a $1.3 million cap hit on the books.

Chandler, a former No. 2 overall pick (2001), has always been viewed as a solid player. His veteran presence should be a fine addition to Los Angeles' young rotation.
