The holiday season marks the beginning of All-Star voting in the NBA. On Christmas Day each year, the league opens up the voting for All-Star starters. While there are a few players considered locks, heavy discussion in the basketball community will ensue about other spots on the rosters. One squad that will want multiple representatives at the game will be the Phoenix Suns.

Last year's NBA Finals runner-up, the Suns have defied critics who said their postseason success was largely due to injury luck. They've started the season 27-8, which is good enough for the second spot in the West and overall in the NBA.

Here are the two Suns players most deserving of spots in the All-Star Game.

Suns All-Star selections

Devin Booker

Without surprise, the first selection simply must be Devin Booker. The former Kentucky guard has really come into his own these last few seasons. After the Suns struggled early in his career, they broke out last season in part due to Booker reaching a new level of stardom. The Suns won 51 games last season and are on pace to win 50 or more again in 2021-22. While Monty Williams and Phoenix's outstanding roster obviously play a huge part in that success, Booker holds the most responsibility for the masterclass the Suns are pulling off this year.

Booker is averaging 23.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, with shooting splits of 44.8/42.1/86.2. The Suns operate differently than most NBA teams, as they have a plethora of offensive options. They have seven players averaging double digits in scoring, and eight if Frank Kaminsky is included (who's only played nine games due to injury). Averaging 23.6 points might not seem as impressive as the 29.9 of Kevin Durant or 28.6 of LeBron James, but Booker's production comes in an entirely different context.

Narratives are almost as important as statistics in the All-Star setting. The Suns' star has the narrative completely on his side, with Phoenix cementing itself as a legitimate title contender. This is the team's best start since Steve Nash and Amar'e Stoudemire chased titles with the “Seven Seconds or Less” Suns in the mid-to-late 2000s. As the Suns' best player, Booker deserves most credit.

Unfortunately for Booker, the guard spots in the West will be heavily contested. With one reserved for Stephen Curry, the other one and all the spots on the bench will be a tough fight between the Suns' star and the likes of Luka Doncic, Ja Morant, Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell and many other players.

However, if it is assumed that either Doncic, due to his level of play, or Mitchell, due to the Utah Jazz dominating in their own regard, will get the other starting spot, it will be Booker that takes one of the bench spots as a lock. Both Morant and Lillard are amazing, but their teams aren't anywhere near title threats like Booker's.

Deandre Ayton

With the heavily contested competition at guard, the best bet for the Suns to get another All-Star is snagging one of the frontcourt spots. They have an ideal candidate in Booker's fellow young building block, Deandre Ayton. He's by no means having an incredible season, as he works to regain the form he had in his sophomore year in the NBA. However, the combination of the Suns dominating and Ayton contributing in a major way still makes him worthy of an All-Star selection, which would be the first of his career.

Ayton is averaging 17.0 points, 11.1 rebounds and shooting 62.6% from the field, meshing seamlessly with the Suns' egalitarian offensive approach. He is working well with Chris Paul, the other star guard in the Suns' roster, and while he is not the first option, he plays well as the second offensive option. Ayton has limitations defensively, but has emerged as an impactful player on that side of the ball, too.

Remember, the guards are more or less locked in the Western Conference, but the forwards are nowhere near consensus. Two are known, as LeBron James will be making his 18th All-Star appearance, and Nikola Jokic will be there for the fourth time, but the other spots are up for debate. Karl-Anthony Towns, Paul George (health provided), Kristaps Porzingis, Brandon Ingram, Bojan Bogdanovic and many others will contend. Other than Bogdanovic, who is generally regarded as a poorer player than Ayton, all the other players are playing for worse teams than the Suns.

Team success might be the reason why Ayton will make his first All-Star appearance in 2022.
