Phoenix Suns big man Deandre Ayton wanted Trae Young-type money before Monday's rookie scale deadline. Unfortunately, he didn't get it because the team apparently doesn't believe he's worth that much.

The Suns center was looking for a five-year max deal worth over $172 million, but according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Phoenix was only willing to offer a smaller extension. Because of that, talks never progressed:

In recent weeks, Phoenix raised the concept of a shorter maximum contract deal — perhaps over three or four years instead of the full five years — but never formally made the offer or broached the idea again, sources said.

That being said, Ayton is now set to head into next summer as a restricted free agent. The Suns will be able to match any offer sheet he receives from another organization. With Phoenix looking to get back to the NBA Finals, this doesn't exactly bode well. Ayton is one of their most important pieces for now and the future. Although he arguably hasn't proven enough just yet to get a $170+ million deal, the former Arizona standout was an integral part of the Suns' postseason success in 2021.

It's understandable why he's frustrated, though. Several other players in Ayton's draft class such as Young, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Michael Porter Jr, and Luka Doncic all inked max contracts this past offseason. The Bahamas native believes he's deserving of it as well.

Needless to say, Ayton will be out to prove a point this season with the Suns.
