The Phoenix Suns are in the midst of a lengthy rebuild as the team has spent a couple of seasons stuck at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. However, they have done a good job of accumulating multiple young prospects in Devin Booker, Dragan Bender, Marquese Chriss, and most recently Josh Jackson.

After selecting Jackson fourth overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Suns also drafted Davon Reed in the second round. Reed is a three-and-D role player who is able to space the floor and compete on the defensive end, two areas of need for a young Phoenix team. However, the shooting guard will be out to start the season after having surgery on his left knee and according to Scott Bordow of Arizona Republic the team will look to fill the void:

The loss of rookie shooting guard Davon Reed to a knee injury could prompt the Suns to look at undrafted rookies or free agents to fill Reed’s spot on the roster, General Manager Ryan McDonough said.

McDonough also added that the team would look at players who fit their timeline, essentially eliminating veteran free agents still on the market. Reed's injury is unfortunate as he would have had a clear path to backup rotation minutes and a chance to develop while the Suns establish their on-court identity.

For the time being, it will be interesting to see who Phoenix decides to sign until Reed is healthy. There is no rush to compete for the Suns, so they have the luxury of evaluating their players and deciding who to build around going forward.
