It seems like Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment will be holding back their grand release(s) for the Super Mario Movie, as they have recently announced that the movie has been delayed until 2023. While the reason for the delay has not been stated, the announcement of the delay comes directly from Miyamoto, who is rarely seen communicating on social media.

Using the official Nintendo Twitter page, Miyamoto stated that after consulting with Chris Pratt and the higher-ups at Illumination Entertainment the North American release of the film will be delayed until April 7th, 2023, and its global release will be delayed until April 23rd, 2023. Miyamoto states that he's deeply sorry for the delay, but promises that the movie will be worth the wait.

While many fans are understandably upset about the delay, as evident by the abundance of sad Mario pictures in the comments, others have mentioned that the recent success of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie may have something to do with the delay of the Super Mario movie, as it managed to top the box office sales charts, pulling in over $249 million dollars worldwide. As far as Hollywood goes, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie is currently the gold standard for video game adaptation movies, making it quite an act to follow for Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment.

As the movie was previously announced in 2018, the cast lineup was revealed in September 2021 and was met with a mixed public reception. The lineup of talent includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. There’ll also be extra cameos from Charles Martinet, who is the original voice actor for Mario within the Super Mario video games.
