Get ready for yet another video game turned television series—the classic first-person shooter (FPS) System Shock is getting its very own live-action adaptation. The show will be part of the original programming of Binge, an upcoming gaming and entertainment streaming platform.
The original System Shock was released back in 1994 by LookingGlass Technologies and Origin Systems. Players wake up from a coma as a hacker in the futuristic world of Citadel Station. In this harrowing tale set in 2072, an AI named Shodan goes rogue. Shodan decides that it wants to dominate or destroy humanity—whichever is more convenient. Adding to the horror, the corporate space station's crew members are now also cyber-enhanced, turning into murderous mutants.
“System Shock is an iconic franchise adored by gamers for more than two decades and a series that helped redefine what it meant to play an FPS,” said Allen Ungar, Chief Content Officer at Binge.
Meanwhile, Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick shared that the team looks forward to “[bringing] System Shock to life in horrifyingly real and new ways.”
After acquiring rights to the System Shock series in 2015, Nightdive is developing a remake of the original title. The live-action series is the second game-based show that Binge has announced so far, with the platform aiming to launch in 2022.
