Bandai Namco just released the Tales of Arise opening trailer, featuring visuals by animation studio ufotable – they are also in charge of all the in-game anime cutscenes. It also shows off the new theme song, “Hibana” by Kankaku Piero.

The new trailer gives us another glimpse of the game's playable characters ahead of the game's September 9 release. They also recently released a Developer Message that gives details on the new battle system.

Tales of Arise project director Hirokazu Kagawa stated that the game aims to be “an action RPG that can be enjoyed by everybody”. They also expounded on the Counter Edge, Boost Attack and Boost Strike systems. Alongside that, they expressed that they wanted to give players a good sense of rhythm and flow in battles.

Tales of Arise‘s main theme is “inheritance and evolution”. As the 17th game in the long-running series, it has quite a lot to live up to. The game will tell the story of its two main protagonists: Alphen, a man who has lost his memories and ability to feel pain, and Shionne, a woman cursed with “thorns” that deal pain to everything she touches.

Two planets, Dahna and Rena, will serve as the game's setting. Dahna appears quite similar to a medieval setting. Meanwhile, Rana is described to be more technologically advanced. 300 years ago, Rana invaded Dahna and enslaved its people. Alphen, the male protagonist, starts out as one of these slaves.
